WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE ON HBCU: SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
TERRANCE MCPHERSON JR.
The White House selected 102 students in 2023 to join the ninth cohort of HBCU scholars, the largest cohort since its inception in 2014. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional leaders were identified through the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity. Terrance McPherson, a student-athlete, was one of the 102 students selected. Five Horsemen Nonprofit is honored to celebrate Terrance’s tremendous dedication to Livingstone College, his major, and himself throughout his undergraduate years of study. Terrance joins his football teammate, D9 Greek Brother, honors graduating classmate of 2025, and Five Horsemen Nonprofit “Athlete of the Year” Jaden Echols setting the academic achievement bar high for today’s Livingstone College HBCU student-athlete.
More than 300 students vied for the prestigious title including networking opportunities, a partnership with NASA to commercialize technology that can improve their campus, and an ambassadorship during the National HBCU Conference. The 2023 HBCU Week National Annual Conference was held from Sept. 24 to 28 at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, Va. The 2023 conference theme is, “Raising the Bar: Forging Excellence Through Innovation and Leadership”. HBCU Scholars engaged in training sessions geared toward honing their skills as leaders. The 2024 HBCU Week National Annual Conference is held in Philadelphia, PA September 15 to 19 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. The theme is, “Raising the Bar: Where Excellence and Opportunity Meet”.
According to the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity, “Students in this program were encouraged to lift their communities, unite others around student success, work to strengthen our democracy, and grow our economy.”
The 2023 HBCU Scholars are talented students who embody the culture of excellence and inclusion championed by our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “On behalf of the U.S. Department of Education and everyone across the Biden-Harris Administration, I congratulate each of our 2023 HBCU scholars on this prestigious recognition and thank them for their commitment to serving their communities.”
